Indapamide is a diuretic that works on the kidneys to remove excess sodium, potassium, chloride, and fluid from the body in order to reduce blood pressure, swelling (oedema), and the workload on the heart. It is available only by prescription. Possible serious side effects include low sodium and low potassium (electrolyte disturbances), too much fluid loss, and allergic reactions. It may cause gout. Indapamide interacts with a number of medications, so inform your doctor and pharmacist of all other medicines you take. Indapamide has an advantage over most diuretics because it does not increase cholesterol and blood glucose.
